Highwaymen

In 2003 I was commissioned to write a novelisation of the movie Highwaymen, soon to be released by New Line Cinema. I dutifully produced a book of which I was rather proud, and which my editor guardedly praised as "in danger of turning into literature." But the trouble with movie novelisations is that they are not books per se, but book-shaped adverts for movies, and if a movie's advertising budget is cut... well, I was paid in full, the manuscript was put on the shelf, and my Highwaymen novel became the world's most expensive piece of fan fiction.

I loved it all the same. It's a good book! One day, when I am rich and infamous, my publishers will sneak it into print because it is from the author of the award-winning Schoolgirl Milky Crisis, or whatever.
